35 hr. Basic Mediation Training
October 18-21, 2008
8:30-5:30

Vassar College
Poughkeepsie, New York

Each year the Mediation Center offers its highly acclaimed 35-hour Basic Mediation training for people who are interested in learning mediation for personal or professional development as well as those interested in volunteering as mediators. Many people who take our training want to give back to their community or plan for a future career. Often, they do both.

Training is conducted by a New York State Unified Court System certified trainer who is also an associate of the Institute for the Study of Conflict Transformation. (www.transformativemediation.org).

For those interested in volunteering, the Mediation Center offers one of the most comprehensive and rigorous apprenticeship programs, which helps our mediators become highly skilled transformative mediators. Our apprenticeship includes working with an experienced mentor and mediating actual cases in courts and at the Center, and getting the support necessary to become a skilled mediator.

The Mediation Center’s training includes learning about conflict from the Relational World View that includes conflict’s effects on ourselves and others, the role of the transformative mediator, as well as practicing skills for helping people become more clear about their own goals and options and better able to understand the perspective of the other party. Introduction to information on the intake process, working with courts, and other special topics will be included. All training participants will practice mediation with the help of a coach.
Included in the training materials is a copy of The Promise of Mediation, by Robert A. Baruch Bush and Joseph P. Folger, co-founders of the Transformative model.

Basic Training cost:
$750.00
$500.00 for Dutchess County residents

Available on a first-come, first-served basis with payment and completed registration form.
